Dow-Key Microwave Corporation, the world leader in electromechanical switches, has been providing Low PIM rated coaxial switches to its customers for few years. Today, Dow-Key is excited to announce the next series of Low PIM switches now available with N-type connectors (in addition to SMA connectors) for both the RF Test and Wireless Communication industries. gI_127812_Capture

Today, a growing demand on wireless communication devices and RF systems require passive intermodulation (PIM) to be carefully considered as we push for higher data rates, larger wireless coverage area and system reliability.

PIM is a concern at the wireless system level because intermodulation products from an adjacent transmit bands appear in the receive bands raising the receiver noise floor. System performance is reduced and the wireless system as a whole becomes less reliable without a Low PIM Coaxial Switches. With Low PIM coaxial switches rated at -160 dBc, the choice can make a big difference on the RF and Wireless Communication testing outcomes.

In order to reach higher levels of performance, the non-linear response to RF signals from passive devices like switches and their connectors must be minimized so that system performance robbing intermodulation products are not produced. With Dow-Key’s New line of Low PIM Coaxial Switches, the results will be supported by the industries best switches test after test.

Dow-Key Low PIM switches offer the solution required to minimize intermodulation. Now SPDT, DPDT and SP6T with SMA or N-type connectors are available in the New Low PIM Coaxial Switches from Dow-Key Microwave. These Low switches are specifically designed and guaranteed to meet 3rd order IM requirements below -160 dBc; at 1870 MHz and at approximately +43 dBm with carrier frequencies 1930 MHz and 1990 MHz.

Adolf Cheung, Dow Key Microwave’s Sales and Marketing stated, “As a technology leader, Dow-Key remains committed to deliver innovative switching solutions for the RF Test and Measurement market, including the Wireless Communications industry.” Cheung also added, “The extensive qualification, along with the refinement of our manufacturing process for our latest Low Passive Intermodulation (PIM) switches, has enabled Dow-Key to build a solid foundation focused on the cutting edge of technology, and in areas directly in line with our customers’ needs. With this new offering of Low PIM Coaxial Switches, we have specifically target the RF Test and Wireless Communication industry’s needs.”

Dow-Key Microwave Corp. Offers New Matrix Platform

By Offering the Advanced MP-Series of Multiplexers, Dow-Key Gives Users More  Control in Performing Switching and RF Testing

Dow-Key, the world’s largest manufacturer of electromechanical switches for radio frequency and microwave applications, is thrilled to highlight another full featured product, the MP-Series Bidirectional Switch Multiplexer. A device that routes one input to various outputs, the Multiplexer now gives users a more convenient platform than before.

“The feedback from our customers for all of the features have been very positive as we have listened to their needs and responded back with a convenient platform that gives users more control…which is the way it should be,” said Sara Nazemzadeh.

The MP-Multiplexer features a drastically higher switching speed from the previous model. With 50 ms the user can command the switch to change position, reducing testing time when the user creates automated tests. This model keeps the cycle count of each position in every switch, and since coxial switches have limited life, this helps users track it.

The user also has full control of adding and removing switches, whether it is for replacing the unit with a new switch or adding additional switches to the matrix. “This is a benefit to the customer as they no longer need to return the unit to us to have it serviced or upgraded…they can do it themselves,” said Nazemzadeh.

Another interesting update is seen in the Ethernet model extending its use to include built-in webpage access so the user can control the matrix from any web browser with assigning both static dynamic IP addressing. Further, the matrix can also be controlled via USB port. Dow-Key SCPI commands are available to allow the use to not only control the matrix remotely but to also be embedded in end-user automated software test programs.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive on both the software and hardware updates. Nazemzadeh said that “the entire brain of the system resided on a tray, which can be easily removed from the rear. It allows the user for trouble free maintenance for field upgrades and repair.” If required, redundant power supplies, fans, and temperature sensors can be added to the unit as well.

Dow-Key, founded in 1945, and headquartered in Ventura, CA, is the oldest continuously operating RF/microwave switch manufacturer in the United States. Dow-Key has also been developing matrix switch solutions for a number of industries including: ATE, Avionics, SATCOM, Space, and more since it’s founding in 1945. Contact Dow-Key directly for additional RF specs on the MP-Series. The Dow-Key website also has a support center online that is home to a number of helpful white paper product tutorials for customer use.

Part of Dow-Key’s New Line of Matrix Switches, the CB-Series is an Advanced
Product Geared for Solving Difficult Test Setups and Switching Obstacles

Keeping in line with their other new product releases for 2012, Dow-Key Microwave is excited to highlight another full featured product, the CB-Series next generation matrix switch. The CB-Series, a non-blocking crossbar system, creates a one-to-one relationship by allowing any input to be connected to any unique output.  Dow-Key developed this next generation crossbar matrix switch system as a switch solution for more complex test setups and signal routing. The CB-Series allows for testing multiple UUT (units under test) with many input and output signals or high speed communication buses without having to connect and disconnect them from the setup. As well, the CB-Series crossbar switching system can route any input signal to any output port such that the path between the I/O ports is unique at any given time.
We are excited to put forward a platform that gives the user more control and more flexibility in ways of switching RF signals between many input and output ports and yet being budget friendly in this economy,” stated Dow Key representative Sara Nazemzadeh. “Software options such as manual control, Ethernet, RS-232, USB and even a built-in web interface are all available in a single COTS solution and features such as keeping track of the cycle count or adding and removing switches to support field repairability and future needs are new to this generation of switching solutions.”
Dow Key’s CB-Series crossbar switching systems typically start from between 2×2 up to 12×12 and can be customized to support larger configurations.
Dow Key CB-Series Crossbar Switch Matrix specs

  • Impedance: 50 Ohm
  • Operating Frequency: DC-18 GHz
  • Switching Time: 50 ms max. (includes control delay)
  • Operating life: 1,000,000 cycles min. (cold switching)
